I usually watch violent crime dramas and so this is a radical departure from my usual taste in films. I loved Sgt. Stubby. The animation is incredible and the story a great tale (or tail) of doggy heroism during WWI. Stubby was a mutt from New Haven, Connecticut who was adopted by a military unit in 1918. America sent troops to France to fight the Germans and the doggy was hidden on a ship. Stubby had an uncanny ability to sense danger and warn his human masters. He also found wounded soldiers and alerted his caretakers as to their location. I have added this movie to my ten best list of 2018.

Want to take your kids (or yourself) to the movies this week? I highly recommend Sgt. Stubby! Wishing there was an awesome “dog movie” that ended happily ever after? Finally found it. Took the kids today, and I was just amazed at the quality of this movie. Beautiful animation and breath taking French scenery interspersed with dramatic (yet child appropriate) scenes of war. This also counts as an educational opportunity! Sgt. Stubby was a real dog, and a real hero in World War 1. This movie alludes to some of the very serious parts of war, but doesn’t show any gore or dying on screen. Poison gas, bombs, wounded soldiers, life-threatening flu, spies and even bias against German-Americans. Sgt. Stubby doesn’t shy away from the horrors of war, but the focus always stays on the relationship between a soldier boy and his dog. This movie is both appropriate and enjoyable for a 3 yr old, but it is also a delight for an adult history nerd or dog lover. If you need a feel-good fix, go see Sgt. Stubby! My 5 year old has been asking to go see it again. Looks like we will be buying the DVD asap.
